It goes without saying that flashcards are an excellent way of learning and reviewing. My son loved to sit on my lap and go over alphabet flashcards with me. He could sit there for at least thirty minutes at a time, going through the cards over and over — and that was before he even turned two!

Needless to say, he learned his ABCs at a very early age! He’s a smart kid, and he loves to learn. I got lucky with him ;) He’s seven years old now and is an excellent reader — quick, focused with amazing comprehension.

My 3-year-old daughter is different. She’s more artistic than my son, and she takes and needs a different approach at learning. Mind you, she is a smart one too… just different ;) She hasn’t the time or patience for flashcards… up until now.

Sure, she’s not one to sit and go through a large deck of flashcards… but with a few tweaks, she has come to love this method of learning. I do not push the cards on her — she has always shown interest in the cards themselves but would tire of them too quickly. I think the amount of cards was overwhelming to her too.

We decided to take it slowly, but most importantly, we focused our attention on the aesthetics of the cards first — the learning followed more fluidly after. We printed and decorated black and white flashcards from the First-School website. The cards print four on each sheet, and we only print and decorate the cards she knows. We will be adding to our collection as she learns new letters — one at a time. This way, the stack isn’t so large and overwhelming. She feels more comfortable reviewing with the flashcards, and seeing her beautiful coloring makes it an even more enjoyable experience!
