When doing a lesson on the letter B, I decided to try a “Coffee Bear” project. I found on one of my favorite preschool resource sites, everythingpreschool.com, simple instructions on how to make said project:

  • What You Need:
    • Glue (or Paint)
    • Coffee Grounds
    • Construction Paper
    • Googly Eyes
    What You Do:
    • Have the children paint bears with glue (or paint) that has coffee grounds mixed in it.

I changed it up just a bit: I did a search for a very simple bear coloring page, then printed it on cardstock. This made it much easier for my 3-year-old to “paint” a bear. It was a bit of a challenge to paint with “coffee glue” — a medium I must admit I’ve never worked with! She just ended up smearing it all over the page with her fingers! I didn’t think it would turn out well, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Once it dried, I cut it out and had my daughter paste it onto a weaved background I quickly threw together. Then I went into my word processor and created and printed a simple “B is for Bear” coloring page. She colored it, smeared on glue and slapped it on the page and then voila! Coffee bear on a “blanket!”

I almost gave up on the project when the icky coffee glue turned out much too difficult to work with… but I think it all paid off in the end. And the best part…. it smells heavenly! :)
